Frequently Asked Questions
Do you only work with artists, writers, and creatives?
No! We love working with artists and writers, but you do not need to identify as an artist or writer to collaborate in therapy with us. The arts are for everyone, but not everyone will make it their life’s work. We are queer-affirming and neurodiversity-affirming therapists, and all are welcome. We are committed to cultural competence and cultural humility in our therapy practice and our personal lives.
What is the difference between art therapy and therapy for artists?
Art Therapy is a modality that actively engages in art-making in session as a non-verbal-centered form of therapy through the facilitation of an art therapist. It is an especially helpful approach to therapy with children. We are not art therapists, but rather, we are therapists who work with artists, writers, and creatives. And, we happen to be artists and writers ourselves! We will occasionally offer creative writing prompts as a suggestion to be explored between sessions.
Do you work with counseling clients in states other than Colorado, Oregon, and Rhode Island?
Carin is licensed in Colorado and Rhode Island, Jen is licensed in Oregon, and our counseling clients reside in these respective states. However, there is hope on the horizon that professional mental health counselors will be able to work with clients in other states that have licensure reciprocity through the Counseling Compact. Stay tuned!
If you reside outside of the three states in which we offer counseling, we do offer coaching through the lens of your own creative work. Do you have a manuscript that you want to examine as a way to make sense of your experiences and feelings? Do you have an in-progress body of work that could be used as a navigational tool for healing? We would love to hear from you!
Do you work with couples or children and families?
We both work with individual adults over the age of 18. We do not work with children or teens at this time. Jen offers couples counseling for clients in Oregon, and Carin can offer a referral for couples counseling in Colorado.
Do you offer virtual therapy?
Yes! We only offer virtual sessions at this time. If in-person therapy is a priority for you, it is definitely something to consider. However, there are advantages to virtual therapy, including accessibility, convenience, and privacy. Zencare is the platform we use for our video sessions. It is HIPAA compliant and easy to use.
Do you accept insurance?
Carin accepts some insurance plans in Colorado and Rhode Island. Jen does not accept insurance at this time. We both work with private pay clients. Some insurance companies will allow for partial reimbursement for out-of-network mental health providers. Check with your insurance company to learn more. We are happy to provide you with a superbill that can be submitted to your insurance company for potential reimbursement. Check out these 8 Reasons to See an Out-of-Network Therapist.
Do you offer a sliding scale?
Yes! We reserve a few sliding scale openings based on need. Feel free to inquire when we meet for your free consultation.
Do you provide mental health diagnoses?
We will ask about mental health symptoms you may be experiencing, and if it is helpful, we may discuss a diagnosis in order to best support your mental health needs. We are trained to do so. We are careful to diagnose because we are committed to de-pathologizing difficult emotions. For example, to feel anxiety is to be human. To experience heightened, debilitating anxiety would fall under the realm of diagnosis. If you are in need of medication management for mental health symptoms, we will share referrals with you of trusted psychiatric providers. If you feel like a diagnosis is important to you so that you have language and a framework for what you’re experiencing, we collaborate with clients on assessing and naming their experiences.
